This week I ventured into town with the intention of buying some much needed flat black leather shoes for everyday wear whatever the weather…..very sensible indeed! So that was the brief but true to form I came home with something completely different. And considering this grim weather we are experiencing I might be forgiven for coming home with some nice new wellies but no, two lovely summery pairs of espadrilles!
Espadrilles have been around for around 4000 years, originating in Spain, but it seems this year the UK highstreet has finally caught on to the greatness of this comfy braided footwear. Originally espadrilles were flat fabric shoes with a jute sole but boy have they evolved. No longer are these shoes only something you bring back from your latest Spanish holiday (along with a hair braid and some duty free). It seemed every shop I went in there were espadrilles of some description, traditional ones, wedge ones, lace-up ones, leather ones, open-toe ones, glittery ones, multi-coloured ones………..the choice is endless. Even if you have never been a big fan of the espadrilles I would challenge you not to find a pair that you like.
I couldn’t resist buying these cute pale pink ones from H&M. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I just love this colour at the moment so I have a few things in my wardrobe they will look lovely with. These wedges are a little more dressy/formal so I thought it only right that I also purchase some flat, more casual espadrilles too and I instantly fell in love with the below shoes from New Look. I really love the black and white ankle ties, they give the espadrilles a quirky edge and in my opinion look more expensive than their £12.99 price tag and will look lovely with some smart shorts.
Although I only bought these two pairs (so far), there were many more pairs that tempted me and if I had room in my wardrobe and more money in my purse then I could have gone espadrille crazy. So here are a few more of my favourites from the highstreet.
